Swim.

IMG_7898         I don’t claim to be a Miley Cyrus fan but I do believe in second chances, or third or fourth if that happens to be the case, and I do happen to like her newest song, Malibu. At first I just thought it was catchy until I heard this lyric.

“I always thought I would sink, so I never swam…

Sometimes I get so scared of what I can’t understand.”

How many like me, never tried “swimming” because you thought you might sink, perhaps literally and figuratively?! If you read my last post then you know I have a fear of large bodies of water because I never really learned to swim very well! My parents put me in swim lessons just like any good parents would but I was always so scared to let go that I never really got very good at swimming. As a result, I still have that fear of letting go and sinking.

Anyone, like me, never tried to do something because of the fear of sinking?? The fear of failing? The fear of the unknown? The fear of not understanding how to get there? The fear of letting go?

Ohh the list of things I could compile that I didn’t do for fear of failure! I’ve actually written about this topic before, maybe even a couple times, probably because it’s one I face so often. We have all been there.

We so easily tell ourselves all the lies. We will never be good enough. We don’t have what it takes. People will think we are crazy. Someone else is better at it than me. It’s too scary; too risky. We don’t have the time. We don’t have the resources. The list goes on…

It’s hard to reverse that mental war with ourselves but I’m here to tell you it’s possible! We need to start believing the things that are true and stop believing all the lies.  There are so many things in this life we can’t understand but know this my friend. Each one of you was created with a purpose. A purpose only you were created to carry out. There is no one else quite like you. There is no one with your exact combination of traits and abilities. You are unique and special. You were designed with a plan in mind and equipped with the right, exact gifts to carry that out. Know that whatever desire is on your heart, it was put there for a reason. So what is that?

What if you pushed through the lies and tried swimming? What would that look like for you? What risk are you afraid to take? What conversation are you afraid to have? What dream are you too scared to chase? What goal do you want to achieve?

We can’t see what the future holds or ever be certain of what will come tomorrow. We only have today! What will you do today to start swimming??

I’d love to hear from you and encourage you along the way! Send me a message in the comments below!

Keep shining, A. Flavio
